The Yale Medical Library was designed in the shape of a Y with two wings, one for the Historical Library reading room and one for the current periodical room, and stacks below for books and journals. The central rotunda honors Harvey Cushing (), the father of neurosurgery, who graduated from Yale College in and returned to Yale in. Edward C. Streeter gave his superb collection of books and artifacts on weights and measures to the Historical Library at the time of its opening. A Yale College graduate of , Streeter took his M.D. at Northwestern. His medical career, spent in practice in Chicago and in bacteriological research at Massachusetts General Hospital, was. The façade is constructed of translucent veined marble and granite. The marble is milled to a thickness of inches (32 mm) and was quarried from Danby, Vermont. On a sunny day the marble transmits filtered daylight to the interior in a subtle golden amber glow, a product of its thin profile.
